Furniture Upholstery & Sofa Component Supplier

Project Overview

A furniture upholstery supplier in Guangdong Province adopted a CNC oscillating knife cutting system to streamline production of sofa covers, cushion components, and upholstery materials.

Customer Background

The company supplies cut-and-sew upholstery components to major furniture manufacturers across Southern China. Their product portfolio includes sofa covers, chair upholstery, cushion foam inserts, and decorative trim pieces. Production involved cutting multiple material types—fabric, leather, foam, and composite materials—across hundreds of different furniture models and styles.

Challenge

The supplier's existing production process was fragmented and inefficient. Fabric and leather cutting was performed manually using patterns and rotary cutters, a slow process that limited throughput. Foam cushion cutting relied on hot-wire cutting equipment, which often caused edge hardening and surface degradation on polyurethane foam—compromising cushion comfort and durability. Managing pattern inventories for hundreds of furniture models was cumbersome, and pattern changes for new designs required days of preparation.

Solution

KJ CNC implemented a versatile oscillating knife cutting system capable of processing the full range of upholstery materials. For fabrics and leathers, the vibrating knife delivered clean, fray-free cuts without scorching. For foam and sponge materials, the cold-cutting oscillating knife eliminated the heat damage associated with hot-wire cutting, preserving foam structure and integrity. The digital pattern library eliminated physical pattern storage, allowing instant recall and modification of any design. The system's large cutting bed accommodated full-width rolls of fabric and large foam blocks.

Machine Configuration

Oscillating knife cutting head optimized for upholstery materials

Digital pattern library and CAD integration

Large-format cutting bed for roll goods and foam blocks

Adjustable cutting depth for various material thicknesses

Material Details

Sofa fabrics (woven and knitted), upholstery leather, PU leather, polyurethane foam, sponge, EVA foam, non-woven fabrics, composite upholstery materials.

Outcome

Production efficiency improved as the single machine replaced multiple dedicated cutting stations for different materials. Foam quality was preserved—cushions maintained their structural integrity without the edge hardening caused by hot-wire cutting. Pattern changeover time dropped from days to minutes, enabling the supplier to respond quickly to new furniture designs from their OEM customers. Material waste decreased through optimized nesting across all material types.

Why This Solution Worked

The furniture upholstery industry requires cutting a diverse range of materials—each with different physical properties and cutting requirements. Traditional approaches used different machines or methods for each material type, creating operational fragmentation. KJ CNC's oscillating knife system provided a unified solution: the same machine processed fabrics, leathers, and foams with equal precision, while the cold-cutting technology protected heat-sensitive foam materials. The digital pattern management system eliminated the logistical burden of physical pattern storage and enabled rapid design changes—essential in a furniture industry characterized by frequent style updates and short product lifecycles.
